Makhachev Breaks Nurmagomedov's UFC Record

 Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight title at UFC 311 by submitting Renato Moicano in the first round, setting a new record in the process

The Russian fighter has now successfully defended his championship title four consecutive times, a first in UFC history. This record was formerly shared by legends Khabib Nurmagomedov, Benson Henderson, and BJ Penn, who each achieved three title defenses. Makhachev, 33, asserted his position as the UFC's best pound-for-pound fighter with an impressive display on Saturday night in Inglewood, California. "I appreciate this belt," Makhachev stated. "If anyone wants it, come to the cage." Nurmagomedov was present in Makhachev's corner, having taken on a coaching role since his retirement from competitive fighting. Brazil's Moicano, 35, took the fight on just a day’s notice, but he was outclassed by the dominant champion. Less than a minute into the fight, Makhachev ensnared a struggling Moicano in a brabo choke, compelling the challenger to submit almost instantly. "I'm always aiming for the finish," Makhachev remarked. "I'm not merely talking. Throughout fight week, during my training camp, and in all my media interactions, if my opponent gives me even the slightest opportunity, I will end the bout." Makhachev has also lengthened his current winning streak to 15, enhancing his overall record to 27 victories and just one defeat. UFC president Dana White recognized Makhachev as his own personal pound-for-pound champion, having spent the past year advocating for heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones.
