US Confident Gaza Ceasefire Set for Sunday Pending Israeli Vote

Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of many in Gaza just before the ceasefire, anticipated to begin on Sunday

 U.S. officials express "confidence" that a ceasefire in Gaza will be implemented on Sunday, despite Israel accusing Hamas of reneging on the agreement.

Hamas asserts its commitment to the deal; however, the group is making a last-minute effort to secure the release of one or two symbolic prisoners from within their ranks.

A scheduled Israeli cabinet vote on the agreement has been delayed.

The health ministry in Gaza reports that Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians prior to the implementation of the truce.

Meanwhile, aid trucks are lined up at the southern crossing into Gaza, as our correspondent Fergal Keane is accompanying an aid convoy from Jordan.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 individuals, who were taken back to Gaza as hostages.

This assault prompted a significant Israeli military response in Gaza, which has led to the deaths of over 46,000 Palestinians, according to the health ministry controlled by Hamas.
